Scamwatch – Protecting your business and your clients

When:  Aug 9, 2024 from 13:00 to 14:00 (AEDT)

Have you noticed an increase in the number and/or complexity of scam emails you receive?

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) established the National Anti-Scam Centre to make Australia a harder target for scammers. Within the centre Scamwatch collects and analyses reports about scams that they then use to help warn others and to take action to stop scams.

Reports to Scamwatch have shown that health professionals are seeing an increase in invoice scams (also known as business email compromise or false billing scams). This involves criminals impersonating a business to send fake invoices to individuals or other businesses requesting payment. The invoice will include the scammer’s bank details instead of the account details of the business, and sometimes the scammers have previously compromised the business’ email account, so they use this legitimate email account to contact existing customers requesting payment. They are increasingly complex and professional looking and can be difficult to identify.

This webinar presents an opportunity for you to hear about the Anti-Scam Centre’s activities, priorities, and future focus. Up-to-date information to help you spot and avoid scams will also be provided.

If you have encountered false billing scams, or have taken steps to protect yourself and/or your clients, we would love you to share these briefly in the Q&A section of the webinar, or email details to jenni@aapi.org.au prior to the session.
