Never in modern history have the eco-socio-political conditions been changing so rapidly and been exposed to us daily. The human condition is context-dependent, with our psychological health and wellbeing impacted by these environmental and social justice issues. People often feel overwhelmed by the task of facing community and global issues and may lack a connection between their values and meaningful action.
There is a unique opportunity for psychologists to reach into a new space that extends the concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support themselves and their clients to address the real impacts of the eco-socio-political issues that matter to them. This presentation will use experiential exercises to inspire psychologists to apply ACT processes - both to themselves and for their clients - to the macro systems of our experience and empower a broader community of action.
Participants will be able to describe the role and significance of avoidance in maintaining cognitive and behavioural distance from eco-socio-political issues. Through experiential exercises, participants will be able to apply the 6 ACT processes to reduce avoidance and build psychological flexibility to taking meaningful steps towards eco-socio-political innovation and activism.
