Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: ethics, challenges and opportunities

When:  Jun 21, 2022 from 19:00 to 20:30 (ET)

This will be a brief presentation covering some of the issues facing psychological therapists doing this work with principles for managing them. The focus will be both on clients and their experience, as well as how therapists hoping to develop skills in this field can prepare themselves both through formal training and personal work. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and for discussion.

Our presenter for this webinar is Renee Harvey, a highly experienced psychologist who relocated from the UK to Australia to develop training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP). Her ideas on PAP training are featured in a recently published book chapter (Harvey, 2021) and in various talks and podcasts.

Renee was selected as a therapist for trials at Monash University in Psilocybin for anxiety and MDMA for PTSD.  She also has a private practice in Melbourne with an emphasis on providing psychedelic integration. Prior to relocation, Renee was an Honorary Research Fellow and assistant guide in the Imperial College London trial researching psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression. She also facilitated the development of psychedelic interest groups and established and ran a psychedelic Integration Circle in Brighton.

Renee will be assisted in the Q&A section by Dr Emily Tunks and Mark Baxter, co-chairs of the AAPi Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy interest group:

Dr Emily Tunks is the founder of Embody Psychology: a health psychology and embodiment practice that reconnects the undervalued but intuitive relationship between our somatic, emotional, and relational wellbeing. Emily has completed training with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).

Mark Baxter has been in the mental health field for 20 years and is currently in private practice with an interest in trauma recovery. Over the last few years he has trained in psychedelic assisted therapy in preparation for its integration into the Australian healthcare system as a legal treatment option.

A recording of this webinar will be available for AAPi Members through the CPD Webinar Library, but for the best experience and the opportunity to ask your questions, join us live. Non-Members who purchase a ticket will be emailed a 30 day access link.
