The evolution of occupational rehabilitation psychology

When:  Sep 11, 2025 from 19:00 to 20:00 (AEDT)

In today's rapidly changing workforce, the role of rehabilitation psychology has become increasingly important.

This presentation will delve into the evolution in this field, highlighting the essential role that psychologists now play in fostering successful return-to-work outcomes through collaboration with third parties, such as employers, insurers and healthcare providers.

Sarah Walsh will discuss the critical importance of applying psychological theories and skills to non-clinical settings, emphasising how these practices can facilitate better workplace integration and overall employee wellbeing. With a rise of psychological injury claims, there is an urgent need to address and support healthcare providers to feel more confident assisting in this space. Well established evidence supporting psychologically informed treatments for physical claims will also be discussed.

This talk will also examine the impact of 2022 legislative changes that underscore employers responsibilities in ensuring the psychological health and safety of their workforce. By understanding these developments, psychologists are better able to appreciate the dynamic and evolving nature of rehabilitation psychology and its impact on individuals and organisations.
