Private practice gives psychologists freedom, autonomy, and the opportunity to do deeply meaningful work, and is often the reason we enter the private practice world. However, it also asks you to hold everything:
The caseload decisions
The risk
The accessibility
The emotional weight of client stories
The invisible responsibility of sustaining yourself while continuing to show up fully for others.
Many psychologists enter private practice with strong clinical skills, but little guidance on how to structure their work in ways that are emotionally and practically sustainable over the long term. Without clear and intentional boundaries, the gradual accumulation of responsibility, emotional labour, and accessibility can quietly lead to exhaustion, self-doubt, and reduced capacity - especially in highly capable and dedicated clinicians.
This webinar offers a different approach. Rather than focusing on doing more or coping better, this session explores how thoughtful, ethical boundaries can protect your energy, support your wellbeing, and strengthen your clinical effectiveness. We will explore the key boundary areas that most influence sustainability in private practice, including caseload size, client complexity, accessibility, scheduling, leave arrangements, and fee structures - and how small, intentional adjustments can create meaningful change.
This is not about becoming less caring. It is about creating the conditions that allow you to continue caring sustainably.
Participants will:
- Understand why burnout develops so commonly in private practice settings
- Recognise early signs that their current practice structure may be unsustainable
- Learn the key boundary domains that protect energy, capacity, and longevity in clinical work
- Reflect on their own current boundary patterns with greater clarity and self-compassion
- Identify one practical, realistic shift to support greater balance and sustainability.
